at least it has dedicated graphics, though i don't know much about how all the cards rank presently. Plenty o' RAM, decent HD cache, peripherals, sturdy CPU, yea £300 sounds well competitive and it'll run TMN satisfactorily. Dell have a good rep at the moment.

Despite all the bad reviews about Vista, personally, I havent found much wrong with it.

There was one time when it thought it was a fake copy Shocked So i had to re-install it and then it decided that it wasnt fake, and it would behave normally. A very annoying thing is all the warning messages when you do the simplest task. About two messages will pop up everytime you want to move or delete a file, and three for installing programs. Also, dont know if its just me, but i cant find a way to write files to Program Files. I have to save it somewhere else, then copy and paste it to where i want it. Networking is a right pain in the backside aswell.

The Vostro's a business model right? My grandpappy gets Dell literature sent to him even though he wouldn't know how to turn one on. I was looking at a slightly lower spec Vostro a while back, but decided against it as my friends tell me that upgrading a Dell isn't easy due to the fact that some of their components are designed specifically for their PCs, plus some mumbling from one about odd-sized expansion slots on the motherboard.

You can get XP on those I think, which may be better for games simply because it won't clog things up so much. Trouble is that you pay exactly the same amount for an older operating system. I'm leaving Vista well alone for a few years.

The computer is really good. I got same chip and DDR RAM2 but you should get a new graphic card.
I don't know about the price^^
...
Vista sucks. I had it installed and if you're not playing the newest high-end games than XP is a lot better since Vista is not compatible with older games. I had to install drivers for Trackmania and every other game I tried to install and it sucked...
I got XP back.. ..i still have the Vista DVD.. ..it looks nice but there's nothing to it
I'll wait until they get a few good service packs going..

yes its the buisness model, tbh trackmania is the only game i play on the PC nowadays,
my counter strike source and BF2 days are long gone, my reaction time and eyes are not too good now i'm past the big 4 0 Crying or Very sad
I/we have a PS3 and Wii so they get played on the most.
My system at the moment is a bog standard fujitsu siemens with pent4 chip ,1 gig ram and a ATI radeon 9600 g card all this is about 4 years old,
so i think the Dell at that money is a must really.

Gents I'm almost at the door of the local computer shop to buy the following, not just for playing TM though Laughing

AMD Athlon X2 4800 Dual Core 64bit AM2
4GB DDR2 667 FSB Memory
512MB Nividia 8500GT graphics card
AC97 6.1 integrated sound
400GB sata 2 hard drive

They want £525 for it but that's with no monitor, does that seem like a good price.

Well, I know nothing about the ins and outs of different components but I'd say that sounds pretty good. Try to find out what clock speed the processor is, the four-figure number on an AMD processor means nothing.

Just bought it today, the fella building it said it's a dual core athlon each running at 2.4ghz, he reckoned it should be decent enough for the current crop of games.

I might even be able to go a whole lap without lag Laughing

Remember, there's kind of two types of lag.

- A drop in FPS, fixed by changing your graphics card, or buying or building a new computer, so you should be ok with that one

- Connection problems, when the server and the client decide they dont like eachother and then chaos insues as they try to kill eachother and packets just get spewed out to anywhere, causing lag and invalid times.
