Does anybody else mess around with radio control cars at all? I've got a tail-happy 1/10th scale touring car, a 1/18th scale off-road buggy that's in the workshop and this, my latest moneypit:

This is an XMOD, one of America's (or technically China's) finest exports. It's a 1/28th scale tuner car model that comes as a standard-looking car and over time burns a huge hole in your pocket until it becomes a stupidly quick wide-bodied terror. My 350Z was bought over here, but is virtually fully upgraded with parts bought via a friend during his trip to America (much cheaper; just one way to beat rip-off Britain). They can do 30MPH+ with the right parts and can be raced in some pretty small spaces. Great fun. The grey marks on the bumper are from incidents involving a fellow TrackManiac's Evo 8 back in the Control Tech room at school before the summer brought four wheel drive, a faster motor, new tyres and some changes to the suspension and gearing. I've since discovered that the front differential from the four wheel drive kit needs replacing as the car's effectively got three wheel drive at the moment. It steers to one side and turns more tightly in one direction than the other. I'd best get on the phone to the UK distributor...

I have seen R.C. race's from time to time on T.V. and it looks spectacular, but the speed they race at, twitching and darting about look's as if it's speeded up, they must be a real handfull to control ??

Not having Sky or even digital TV I'm not entirely sure what RC races are shown on TV, but I'm guessing it's the really serious guys with sponsorship from the biggest manufacturers. Only the best parts, motors, batteries etc. will do and set-up is crucial for the best times. Yes, they probably are hard cars to drive at that level.

Personally, I just do it on a showstring for a laugh with some mates. We hire a village hall every fortnight and set out a track with some old cones and fire hoses (an ex-racer was a fireman). The floor conditions vary from week to week; it's usually slippery, but a good night's racing can be had when the young farmers have been as the floor's suddenly made sticky, ideal for hot laps in a two minute race. Contact is often a big infulence on the outcome of a race and this can at times prove expensive, particularly if a car gets stuck under one of the radiators...

Nitro and petrol models are a nice idea but I'm sticking with electric as regular cleaning and strip-downs are not really my kind of thing. Ok, so I end up doing that to my XMOD quite a bit at the moment if something goes wrong, but at least it's not smelly and covered in fuel.

I'm a big Scalextric fan as well as the RC cars. Standard, Micro, Digital...If you can name it, it's probably here in some shape or form.

Cool, do you do the scarlectrix racing with about 10 lanes and the super light cars that have faster motors?

Bought my sisters kids a digital slot car set for christmas and they loved it. First time I tried a digital version it was magic. (She has four girls under 10 years old - what did she expect from her mad brother)

10 lanes? I wish. The house I live in's barely large enough for a two lane track, so most of the time when I need a dose of Scalextric the Micro stuff comes out. Smaller, less cars and track piece types and usually marketed as being for little kids but much, much faster than you'd expect a car around 7cm long to move.

The digital stuff's great, I use the Scalextric system. Normally this does the away leg of my slot car career at the homes of friends with considerably larger front rooms than mine. I've built tracks so long with these people that a noticeable drop in power occurs in places. For actual racing at the moment I only use the low detail one piece body cars. The problem is these are Audi TTs and Porsche Boxsters-I've got no idea why the starter set was called 'Lane Change Challenge' when a much more apt name would be 'Short Cut' or 'A Close Shave'.

If anybody's thinking of going Digital with Scalextric, the rumours are 2008's bringing a brand new system out. Rolling Eyes
