I just saw this in my local branch of PCW:
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/283578#productInformationSection
Without the monitor they would knock £120 off it. Iseems like a pretty decent computer to me for the budget, the graphics card seems above average for a package of this price range - can anyone see a weak link in the specs? Thanks!

Looks reasonable to me, Vista isn't be ideal but you'd be hard pushed to find anything XP these days. A nVidia 8600 GS should perform fairly well on TM I would think, but probably not on other games...

Thanks DC. I don't do FPSs or anything. I think my current card is a 3250 or something, and my computer is starting to struggle with PDFs and Flash animations!

Depends how long you want to keep it.

I think that processor is going to be seriously slow in 3-4 years. But then it all depends what you'll be using the puter for.

Dant, that depends on if they find a new way of making processors in the next few years. Im pretty sure they have reached the maximum speed of silicon... so they are just finding ways of improving it, i.e. adding cores, until they find something new that is better.

Im not sure if thats correct, needs mad or someone to come in with the highly technical post that no one properly understands... Razz

But, back on topic - the computer looks ok for that price...

not bad, but try these people. Very good value for money and lots of reasonably priced options. NOTE the monitor etc is not included....

Have a look at some of the higher spec machines too.....

similar spec to your quoted system...

Cheers Mad. It's a similar price but the spec is quite a bit better, especially the graphics - and they still do XP too. Is Vista really as bad as everyone says? Hasn't it got better since launch?

The way Vista uses memory is horrendous, but it looks nice and personally, i dont think its as bad as people say it is. Very Happy Also, SP1 came out a little while back i think and they made a few changes/improvements.

it is pretty, some of the filing is surprisingly different Confused , seems to be always doing something in the background (but all the new kit can handle it with 2GB RAM, you need 4GB for 64-bit), it loads and shuts down like lightning, the new toolbar is extra-functional. I really don't know why they've altered the Start menu and filing, and some of the Utilities are harder to find. SP1 I gave the elbow after my PC refused to boot and I had to use the recovery disk, likewise Creative driver update which deeply dipped my Vent as the post races away off-topic, Motors TV is fantastic, just been glued to hours of street racing, yay drift ROCKS Very Happy

IMHO Vista= Resource hogging, memory using most complicated P.O.S. that EVER came from Microsoft. But, it's just my opinion mind you.
