Mad I was thinking about creating my own server and I was wondering just how much it takes and is it something I would really want to do ? (Being a kid of an infinite amout of sports I don't have a lot of time.) |

creating a server is not that difficult but.........
you need to get a load of tracks together.
you need to check out your bandwidth limits and speeds with your ISP.
you have to bear in mind that it will restrict other internet usage.
ISP speeds.....
A regular 8mb connection here gives you an UPLOAD speed of ~440kb
UPLOAD is the bottle neck and that kind of speed will give you a reliable 12 slots. - you could push a few more but it's worth keeping some spare bandwidth. With that setup it could use as much as 35GB a month in bandwidth, depending upon how it's measured. OUCH.
I use a business connection with an upload speed of ~880kb. It lets me run 30 slots. I split this accross my servers because individual setups don't like racing 20+ other cars..... they can't handle it. Because it's business evenings and weekends do not account for my peak usage so mad laps uses 20GB peak (mon-fri 9.00-5.00) and 70GB total per month. Thats purely running the trackmania stuff............ a lot of ISP's would not tolerate that amount of usage inluding the ones that claim they are unlimited. BE WARNED.
If you want any help give me a shout. |

And always check the unlimited contract details. They will usually have a heavy usage policy, which is basically, if you use too much bandwidth, your conection is limited to a couple of kbps, literally. One of my mates had a download speed of about 150kbps, and now it wont go over 30kbps because he has been limited. That was a while ago and speeds have got faster since then For a server, you really need a business connection, because of the bandwidth usage.
But once its up and running, i dont think theres much to do. Make sure its running ok each day, check new tracks, admin the server responsibly. Most of it can be delegated to others if you have much time. But im not the one with the experience of running a server, so all that may be wrong. |

ISP's who claim unlimited usage will rarely tell you what the cap really is. When they slow your connection down it's normally to the end of the month and then you restart.
Nightime usage is virtually unlimited or more available so high usage between 12 and 6am is usually permitted.
ALWAYS know the peak hours.... home ISPs all have different definitions which can be 9am till midnight daily.
A truly unlimited 2mb account would cost you approx £80 a month. |

THX for all the info guys. After seeing all that, I'm wondering if my computer IS acctually capable of hosting a server. Plus, putting up a site would probably cost a bit, and I don't make much for being a soccer ref & a swim coach. I'll check in to it, but I doubt my computer will agree with the needs to make a server. THX again guys. |

Its not so much the computer, really you need a good processor and the rest as standard, but its mainly the connection to the interweb. Also, for the site you need to buy the domain, and have it running of a server (ftp? not sure) Also the website needs coding and any bugs fixing in the code. Will take some time. |
