just got a second hand pc,
its an athlon 2 64 bit 3 gig dual core
1 gig ddr2 ram
1 x dvd rom drive
2 x pioneer 212 sata dvd rewriters (they do dual layer discs apparantly)
Hitachi sata2 500 gig hard drive
asus 7600gs silent graphics card think its 512mb
in a wavemaster cooler master aluminium case, few scratches down one side though
700 watt psu with power level digital display on back of case
i paid 2 ton for it, is that about right? good deal/bad deal
edit just downloaded Trackmania the settings are
shadows high
shader quality pc3 low
texture quality high
max filtering anisotropic 8x
geomitry details low
and i'm getting 51.5 fps on bench _________________

That sounds pretty good, especially for £200. The things you need to look at next if you're going to upgrade it are its RAM capacity (with it being 64 bit you could fit as much as 4GB or more) and the graphics card. _________________

4 gig of ram is fine as long as your running vista
dont forget xp only supports up to 2gig |

I thought XP SP2 can take 3GB and XP Pro x64 can take some stupid amount that no PC will have for years? It's all further complicated by there being 32-bit versions of Vista n'all. _________________

i've just bought a BFG 8800GT 512mb gddr3 graphics card from PC World, they were having a clear out as their refurbishing the shop so i got it for £74
i'm a bit confused though, my psu doesn't have a 6-pin connector to power it but included with the card is a 6-pin to 2 molex connectors. do i have to put power to BOTH molex connectors (i do have 2 spare)
this is the card on the BFG website
http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr88512gtocxfe.aspx
edit: its just powered by 1 molex to the 6 pin atm and runs crysis ok _________________

One molex is all thats required, but you can put another molex `off the other rail` to help in those stressful graphics moments, but, with a 700w supply, this wont be needed, nice buy!! _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupidity. |

graphics cards working fine, i've just fitted 4GB Patriot 2x2GB DDR2 240Pin PC2 6400 800MHz RAM and i was able to use my old ram too as thats the same speed so i'm now on 5gig
Trackmania looks a lot different with the settings turned up, my BF2 is on full settings, i was used to 75% view distance and no effects
maybe its time i got Vista? (i know a nigel)
thanks guys for all your help _________________
