Hi
I've come across a problem with a piece of audio equipment I use for leisure. Its a Mordaunt Short 309i subwoofer that i use to listen to music/watch movies through/play games etc.
pic:
I bought it brand new in Feb and just a couple of nights ago it stopped working, instead when I turn it on a horrible buzzing noise comes on and stays on constantly, when i play music it just crackles.
Anyway, to the point. I've got a 12 month warrenty with the sub, which I bought from a shop in Nottingham (over the web). So I can either pay to get the sub taken down to Nottingham by courier to have them have a look and fix for free (obviously I'll have to pay for it to be delivered to them and returned, its a big bugger too), but the problem is that it could take weeks and they may have to send it to their supplier (god knows where that is).
Option 2 is to take it to an audio repair shop round the corner from where I work and have them have a look at it, this would be fixed on the same day and there would be no delivery charges as i would drop it off on the way to work. The bonus is that any parts they might need (resistors fuses etc) I can get from my work at a staff + supplier discount.
So I either get a free fix from the store that I bought it from but wait weeks/months for it to be returned or break the warranty and get it fixed on the day, could be more expensive but it will be much quicker to get it back.
What would you guys do? |

The local option every time. I don't like 'warranty' work, you're unlikely even to get the same unit returned but some other piece in for repair which may have its own inherent problems, then they'll pester you forever by email 'cos they never let go of a 'live one'.
With these appliances you are likely to have blown a voice coil, an input or the crossover. This could get up to £30 I estimate and trust me they won't be giving you a parts list you can supply at cost. This will undoubtedly be a wee bit more expensive than carriage to a faraway city calld Nothappning, but it will be quicker and you will have immediate recourse to face-toface ranting if they screw up.
Have fun _________________

Picked it up this morning from the local repair shop, they charged me £83.50 for repairs (considering the fact i bought it for £175 new), they took almost two weeks to get it fixed too. |

Just wondering if the dude that runs the repair shop looks at these forums and saw you coming _________________
